Before requiring an extraction, you will usually have visited the clinic for a general exam, or you reached out to us because you’re experiencing pain or have noticed a broken tooth. During this appointment, the dentist will examine your teeth and take a series of x-rays. This allows them to diagnose issues such as cracks, infections, decay, gum disease, or significant damage that may require extraction. Most patients requiring an extraction have already been experiencing symptoms like increased sensitivity to hot or cold, intermittent pain, constant pain, bad breath or have noticed a broken tooth.
Prior to an extraction your dentist will discuss all possible options you have to fix these issues, they will discuss the costs, the concerns and all relevant information required for you to make an informed decision whether an extraction is the best decision for you. If you choose to proceed with an extraction, the tooth and surrounding gum area will then be numbed with local anesthetic, ensuring the procedure is pain-free. You may feel some pressure during the extraction which is completely normal. However, no pain should be felt during this procedure.
In some cases, if the tooth has curved roots or is significantly broken down, we may need to surgically remove it in sections. Sutures will be placed after a surgical extraction to aid healing. If the tooth is difficult to remove or if it’s a wisdom tooth, a referral to an oral surgeon may be necessary.
After the extraction is complete, we will provide detailed care instructions to ensure you stay as comfortable as possible during your recovery. By following these instructions and taking recommended pain relief this will help you recover smoothly. It’s normal to experience pain, swelling, and limited mouth opening for the week following the extraction. The pain will gradually decrease over time, but it may take a month or more for the area to fully heal. You may also experience some tingling or numbness in the lip or tongue. Additionally, bad breath and a bad taste in the mouth are common in the first week as the area heals.
Our team will be here to guide you through the recovery process and answer any questions along the way.
